Do you have employees operating chainsaw equipment, or engaged in tree care operations (e.g. felling, trimming)? In both general industry and construction, OSHA requires that each operator and “tree-worker” be properly trained and evaluated prior to engaging in tree-care operations. Training must be conducted by a person who has “the knowledge, training and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence”. This course is designed to help participants better understand the design, safe-operation and maintenance of chainsaws; requirements and consensus standards; responsibilities of designated persons; and safe tree-care operations for chainsaw equipment operators and tree-workers within both the public and private sectors, including in the agricultural, site-preparation, utilities, public works, roadway maintenance, landscaping and groundskeeping industries - as well as managers/supervisors, superintendents/foremen, safety personnel, landowners, homesteaders, and hobby farmers! Topics include:
- Understanding the design and operation of chainsaw equipment
- Inspection, safe-operation, and maintenance of chainsaw equipment
- Applicable OSHA and ANSI Standards (e.g. ANSI Z-133 (2025))
- Worksite assessment and management of tree-care operations
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Emergency Planning and Response
NOTE: This training involves a significant hands-on component involving the operation of chainsaws and similar equipment, and felling, limbing and bucking actual trees.
- What should I wear? Portions of the course will be conducted outside, so dress for the weather and outdoor conditions! Full-length pants and leather boots are required. Participants are recommended to bring ANSI Class 2 high-visibility apparel, as well as both a short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirt, and appropriate outerwear.
- Do I have to bring my own equipment? Encouraged, but not required. Participants are encouraged to bring chainsaws and personal protective equipment that they are familiar with or will actually be using. But if you do not have it – what is necessary will be provided.
- Do I need to have personal protective equipment (PPE)? Encouraged, but not required. Personal protective equipment is required during the hands on portions of the class, including but not limited to, head protection, hearing protection, eye/face protection, hand-protection, and leg-protection. Participants are encouraged to bring their own – particularly for proper fit and comfort - if they have them.
- Do I have to bring fall-protection? No. Although more comprehensive versions of this course include climbing and working from mobile elevated work platforms, this version of the course does not include climbing or working from elevated platforms – all work is conducted on the ground.
- Anything else? Lunch and beverages will be provided. However, the class consists of three full days, and are active and “hands-on”. Please bring any snacks and refreshments for yourself that will keep your energy-level up!
