Does your facility have large quantities of hazardous materials that can potentially lead to a spill-incident, and create a reasonable possibility of employee exposure? Do you have an 8-hour training program to train these employees on how to identify and report a hazardous substance release, and protect themselves and others during the incident? OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard for emergency response involving hazardous substances (29 CFR 1910.120) requires a minimum of 8-hours of initial operations-level training for any first-responder with primary responsibilities of containing the release, preventing further exposure, and protecting persons, property or the environment. This course is intended to supplement an employer’s internal HAZWOPER training program and provides 8-hours of initial training for workers who have incidental responsibilities involving spills and releases of hazardous substances. Topics include:

• Basic terminology involving hazardous materials
• Basic hazard and risk assessment techniques
• Basic control-measures
• Emergency response planning
• Incident command systems
• Containment and/or confinement operations
• Basic decontamination principles and practices
• Recovery and continuity practices

This course does not include site-specific or hands-on training required for employers.

NOTE: The Minnesota Safety Council does not offer the HAZWOPER “40-hour” Initial Training.
